This form of carpet, although believed to have originated in or near Brussels, appears in England in the mid 18th century. It is woven in worsted wool incorporating a looped pile giving it a characteristic ribbed texture.

Normally woven with 5 colours, this may be increased to 8 by the use of 'floating' warps.
